DAHLIA WAS FACED WITH a choice. Submit or die. No, no, that wasn’t it. Again, her imagination was running away from her, and not even leaving a memo, or breadcrumbs. Dahlia’s hands shook as she ripped open the tea bags packet and plunked them into mismatched mugs she’d found at a neighborhood garage sale. She hoped Liam liked mint. She loved all kinds of mint. That was all she had in her cupboard, peppermint, spearmint, the mix of spearmint and peppermint, and mint from North Africa, and from her own garden. Jitters of excitement, or was it dread, flew through her. Jeez, she hoped it wasn’t dread. Did she have to feel all of her feelings all the time? Liam. So close. Sitting in her little cluttered creative home. His tall length folded into her tiny couch.

Heat flooded the pit of her belly, up her chest, and spilled out onto her cheeks. In her body, it felt like rockets going off for Chinese New Year. Oh dear.

She managed to fill the mugs from her whistling tea kettle and hardly spilled any hot water. She took a comforting inhale of the spicy mint and carried their mugs over to the tiny couch and to the chest that served as a coffee table. She placed them on the flat surface with nary a big spill. Only a tiny one. Nerves. It had to be nerves.

Liam rested his big palm on the back of her hand. She gasped at the tingling heat that zoomed up her arm and straight to her center.

“Dahlia, you okay?”

“Um, yes.” She straightened and smoothed her hands down the sides of her shirt.

Liam’s gaze followed her movements.

She stilled her hands. “Why wouldn’t I be? You’re only the first guest I’ve had over at all, and you’re a man.”

“I noticed.”

She fluttered away to straighten things, not really paying attention to what she was shifting, but it felt good to move. “Maybe this was a bad idea. I don’t know. I just—”

Liam was beside her in an instant, offering his warmth, his certainty, his firmness, oh boy. “It doesn’t have to be so complicated, does it?”

“What is it with you guys? Everything is just so easy for you—”

He placed his hands on her shoulders. “It’s not.”

“What?” That stilled her movements. She peered up at him, his gaze serious, his mouth not frowning, but not smiling either.

“I haven’t felt this way in a long time,” he said and placed his hands on her shoulders, caressing up and down her arms, his body only inches away. His meaning was clear to her.

“No,” she whispered and put up her hands in protest and met his warm chest, muscled and firm under her palms. “You’re not supposed to fall for me.”

“I’m not.” He smiled. “It’s just a Christmas fling.”

“It is?” she said, eyeing his mouth.

“Mmmm.” He didn’t wait for a royal invitation but bent his head and angled it just right so she could kiss him, and crawl all over him, hands on his back, firm butt, arms, shoulders, all muscle, warm, and hard in all the right places.
